Mom and I usually go to the Hush Puppy restaurant on West Charleston and always enjoy it, but we just found out that their other location on North Nellis is open on Sundays at Noon! We were both very happy with the Nellis location also, even though it's in an older part of town and the area is a little run down. The restaurant looks rather plain on the outside and has a weird odor in the lobby, but that just makes it even more authentic. Having lived in South Mississippi for almost 25 years, I have to say they really nailed the ambiance of the place as an old fashioned Gulf Coast seafood shak! The salad bar was good (smaller than in the West side location, but more than adequate) and Mom was thrilled with their green tomato relish, which you don't see out here much in the West. The food was very good as we've come to expect from Hush Puppy.
Mom had the all-you-can-eat fried catfish which is always great and I loved my choice of the blackened catfish with the giant baked potato (the potato was so large I saved that to take home for dinner!). Last but not least, the service was excellent. Our server Jen handled the front of house nearly all by herself, hostess, cashier and server, and was very attentive and friendly in spite of handling all that! Now that we know they have lunch service (Sundays only, but that's probably a good thing for my waistline!) we'll definitely be going back more often!

There was no one in the drive through, so it was very quick. We ordered the catfish family pack. The fish was hot, some of the batter was off and you could see the almost translucent freezer burn on the fish. Which would explain why it was chewy. The French fries were all soggy in oil. The Coleslaw was actually brown, and the Tater sauce had been sitting out warm and had turned. This was so gross. I was supper sad, as I loved this place as a child. What a waste of money. I actually feel robbed. And I am still hungry, because we couldn't eat it!
